Gymnothorax favagineus

Gymnothorax favagineus, otherwise known as the laced, blackspotted, leopard, tessalate or honeycomb moray, is one of the largest and more well known moray eels.

Physical description[]

G. favagineus is one of the larger morays, attaining between 200 and 300cm in length (upt to 10 feet), and up to 18kg in weight.

The colour is highly variable throughout its range - specimens range from having the typical dark brown with light cream honeycomb pattern, to being overall dark brown in appearance. Patterning and colouration differs between ages, locations and environment: those in clearer water have been noted to have less dark patterning compared to those found in turbid waters.
