Elodea canadensis (Common Waterweed, American Waterweed, Canadian Waterweed, or Pondweed) is a submergent aquatic plant that lives for around two years in freshwater environments such as rivers, and lakes in North America.

The scientific name of Elodea was given to it by André Michaux in the late 1700s. However the plant also carries other names;
